iomart and e-Skills UK Host Scotland’s First National ICT Careers Event

11th June 2014 · Press Releases

600 students attend The BigAmbition Event at BT Murrayfield Stadium

iomart is today chairing Scotland’s first national ICT careers conference event – an employer-led event, organised by e-skills UK, which aims to inspire young people to take up careers in tech.

The event is being attended by Angela Constance, Cabinet Secretary for Training, Youth and Women’s Employment.

More than 600 students have been brought together at BT Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, to connect with tech employers including iomart, Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle, RBS, Amazon, Tesco Bank, IBM and HP. The employers are showcasing the wealth of exciting career options in tech, ranging from software to cyber security, while recent ITgraduates will give insights into their roles and responsibilities.

Speaking about the event, the Cabinet Secretary thanked the tech employers for showing commitment to engaging with students. Ms Constance said: “It is vitally important that young people are connected with employers so they can learn about the skills and knowledge that businesses are looking for, and where opportunities exist for rewarding careers. The digital sector is a priority area for Scotland, so I’m delighted that employers are coming together at the first ever National ICT Event to give hundreds of young women and men the chance to learn about opportunities in this area.”

The event is being hosted by Phil Worms, Director of Marketing for iomart, who got proceedings underway by encouraging the students to take selfies and share them via the Twitter hashtag #ICTScot.

He said: “This first national conference is an important step in addressing the ICT skills gap that exists in Scotland. Young people need to see how dynamic and exciting our industry is and what incredible career opportunities it can offer. Hopefully we’ve inspired a new generation of young people to go on to be the tech stars of the future.”

Karen Price, CEO of e-skills UK said: “It is incredibly rewarding to see the enthusiasm from both students and employers at today’s event. The National ICT Event offers an invaluable opportunity for the tech sector to engage with and inspire young people about rewarding careers in the sector. I’m grateful to the Minister for showing her support for the employers’ work to invest in the next generation.”

The National ICT event aims to address young people’s perception of the tech sector. Despite the fact that the IT and telecoms sector contributes more than £3 billion per year to Scotland’s economy, the proportion of professionals in the industry aged 16 to 29 dropped from 29% in 2001 to just 14% in 2011.
